AI & Data Governance Webinar for Safaricom

Ikran Abdirahman, Principal Consultant at DIFA, participated as a speaker in a company-wide internal webinar for Safaricom focused on Data and AI Governance, where she delivered a session on the legal, regulatory, and ethical considerations surrounding the responsible use of AI and data within large organisations. The webinar was part of Safaricom’s internal capacity building programme and was aimed at equipping staff with a clearer understanding of how AI systems interact with data protection, consumer protection, and broader governance obligations. The session examined how AI is increasingly being embedded into business functions such as customer engagement, analytics, and automation, while also highlighting the legal and operational risks that can arise when AI tools are deployed without adequate oversight.

Drawing on Kenya’s regulatory framework and emerging global standards, the presentation focused on practical governance questions facing organisations adopting AI. These included lawful data use, accountability for automated decision making, transparency, bias, and the risks of over reliance on AI outputs. Particular attention was given to the importance of strong data governance through internal policies, documentation, and human oversight to manage risk.

Even in the absence of AI specific legislation, organisations remain accountable under existing data protection, consumer, and cybersecurity laws, and that proactive governance is essential to sustaining trust as AI adoption continues to grow.
