Cascading Responsible AI Across Kenya’s Innovation Ecosystem

Cascading Responsible AI Across Kenya’s Innovation Ecosystem

On 9 May 2026, Africa Tech Space, in collaboration with the Rift Valley Institute of Business Studies, hosted the “Responsible AI in Action: Scaling Business and Careers with AI” workshop in Nakuru ,Kenya. The event brought together entrepreneurs, innovators, students, and several other ecosystem actors to explore practical and ethical approaches to AI adoption for sustainable business growth.

The programme reflected an important shift within Kenya’s innovation ecosystem: positioning
Responsible AI not only as a compliance consideration, but also as a strategic enabler for innovation, trust, and business competitiveness. Sessions explored practical AI applications in marketing, enterprise support, cyber security, predictive analytics, and operational efficiency, alongside discussions on data protection, Responsible AI implementation, and collaboration among entrepreneur support organisations.

The workshop also introduced the “Responsible AI Toolkit for African Startups” developed by DIFA, to participating networks as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen local awareness and context-driven implementation of Responsible AI approaches. The Toolkit was developed under the UK-Kenya AI Challenge Fund (Phase II), with support from Akili AI, the British High Commission, and the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet).

The workshop represents an early example of the cascade effect envisioned through the “Training of Trainers on Responsible AI for African Startups” delivered by DIFA Consultancy in March 2026 under the same initiative. The training convened 14 innovation hubs operating across 15 counties in Kenya to strengthen institutional capacity for Responsible AI adoption and implementation. Post-training findings showed that 86% of participating hubs committed to cascading Responsible AI knowledge and support within their own programmes and networks. The recent Nakuru workshop demonstrates how these commitments are beginning to translate into locally led ecosystem engagement.

Together, these efforts reflect growing momentum around AI literacy and ethical AI adoption, while highlighting the important role of innovation hubs in scaling Responsible AI practices across Kenya.
